In February 2017 a revolutionary new fat removal treatment was approved for use in Australia. The treatment is safe and effective in removing moderate to severe submental fat (found under the chin). This treatment helps to contour the jawline and improve appearance.
Our Fat Dissolving injections are a long-term solution to eliminating stubborn fat cells that do not respond to diet and exercise.
The treatment contains a substance that naturally occurs in the body. This substance breaks down and absorbs the fat found in the food that we eat.
When the substance is injected into the treatment area, it dissolves and eliminates the fat cells within that area. Once fat cells are removed from the body, they can no longer store fat thus minimising the number of fat tissue in the treated area.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE?
Similar to other cosmetic procedures like wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers, a consultation is required. During the initial consultation, you will be able to ask us questions or address any concerns you may have regarding the fat dissolving injections.
To help us determine if you are a candidate, during your consultation, you will be asked the following questions:
- Have you previously had surgery to the face, chin or jaw?
- Do you have a history of bleeding problems?
- Have you had cosmetic injectables in the past?
- Are you on any medications?
The treatment cannot be administered in:
- Individuals who have an active infection.
WHAT’S INVOLVED IN THE TREATMENT?
During treatment, the area will be sterilised and marked with a special grid to allow for an accurate transfer of the solution. The treatment normally takes between 10-15 minutes.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Like any cosmetic procedure, side effects may develop, these side effects can include discomfort, swelling, redness and bruising. Paracetamol is advised to help with pain.
After treatment, swelling may remain from 4 to 6 weeks while the treatment substance is dissolving the fat, (this is an excellent indication that treatment is working).
Frequently Asked Questions
The number of treatments depends on the amount of fat in the area. Most patients require at least two treatments although some patients with excess fat in the area may need additional sessions.
Treatment is administered every 4-6 weeks (preferably every six weeks to make sure resolution of swelling and full results are seen).
The number of treatments required will be discussed at your consultation. For a lot of people, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy diet is no guarantee that their double chin will disappear.
Thankfully, patients can now get rid of their unwanted double chin through the use of fat dissolving injections.
The injections consist of a potent enzyme that significantly reduces the amount of fat present in the double chin. This procedure is now used extensively in clinics throughout the world and is just beginning to take hold here in Australia as well.
The fat dissolving substance is a powerful enzyme that splits the fat cell membranes contained within the double chin. When these cell membranes are breached, the human body is able to dissolve the fat as waste material and eradicate it from the body. Our body develops double chin fat over a length of time and can be difficult to remove through natural means.
Each patient is assessed by our trained doctors to help determine if the treatment is appropriate for them. Once approved, the fat dissolving injectables will be inserted into the required area. The treatment area is iced both before and after the procedure. This helps to minimise any swelling that occurs.
In order to provide effective double chin reduction, 2 or more treatments are required, up to a maximum of 6 treatments. Individual results vary and your doctor will assess your progress after your initial two treatments to determine whether you require additional treatments or not. The first two injections are scheduled six weeks apart from each other.
Each patient will experience noticeable swelling on the day following the procedure. During this time, the double chin will often enlarge. This is because the fat cells are undergoing a process known as lysis, which refers to the dissolution of the cell membranes. The swelling lasts for around two days or so, before easing off and is a positive indicator of the treatment’s progression. It is important that patients refrain from using any medication that deceases the swelling during this time.
In addition to swelling, patients may also experience some mild pain and bruising which can last for several days. A Panadol may be taken to help curb any discomfort. A week following your treatment, any swelling or pain should be non-existent. Patients are advised to take a few days off work to recover from their treatment.
At present, the injectables have only been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to remove fat from the chin region and so we do not administer the injections to other areas of the body.
