Facelift and Facial Rejuvenation Surgery by Dr Mark Doyle, Specialist Plastic Surgeon
A facelift is an ideal solution to natural facial ageing. Changes in skin elasticity and a decrease in facial fatty tissue causes your face to sag and hang loosely. Skin folds become more prominent under the chin, upper neck and corners of the mouth due to gravity. Changes in the bony facial structure and muscle action also occur. Beyond skincare products, injectables like fillers and anti wrinkle solutions, there comes a time where a facelift can help reduce saggy jowls and excess skin.
Benefits of a facelift
A facelift can help restore the contour of your face and neck to produce a more pleasing, youthful appearance. Depending on your specific aesthetic goals, a facelift can be performed as a standalone surgery in conjunction with other procedures such as rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery or a brow lift.
Dr Doyle’s facelift patients often tell us their family and friends say they look refreshed and rejuvenated after surgery – as if they’ve been on a relaxing holiday.
The facelift surgical procedure
A facelift requires a general anaesthetic and takes anywhere from two to five hours to complete. This is a day procedure though, so patients are free to go home on the same day.
To perform a facelift, incisions are made along the hairline, by the ear, and along the earlobe. The excess skin is then divided and lifted, allowing the underlying tissues to be tightened. All remaining skin can then be tightened and secured with sutures, producing a smoother, younger appearance. This is the only way to achieve this after we age.
A bandage is applied to the face after surgery, which will need to remain in place for one day.
Patients will need someone to drive them home after their surgery and ideally assist them for a day or two, particularly if they have young children.
What can I expect during recovery after a facelift?
Following a facelift, patients can expect bruising and swelling, which can last up to three weeks. Every patient heals differently so it’s up to you how soon you want to return to work. It is, however, essential for patients to spend at least a week at home to recover. Sleeping with your head in an elevated position can reduce swelling and pain medication can be used to reduce any discomfort. Dr Doyle will provide you with specific aftercare instructions that will reduce the risk of complications after a facelift. Exercise can only be resumed after six weeks once your face is completely healed.
You can expect to see a noticeable difference once some of the swelling has subsided but the full results of your facelift will only be visible after about a year. This surgery does require patience but the results are worth it. In most instances, results last up to 10 years. Unfortunately, a facelift won’t protect you from the effects of ageing indefinitely but your results will certainly be long-lasting.

How much does a facelift cost? Prices and Fees for Facelift in Queensland
The cost of a facelift is variable because each patient has specific goals and requirements. Once a tailored approach has been decided on, surgeon, anaesthetist and hospital fees will also be factored into the final cost of the surgery.
Since a facelift is a cosmetic procedure, it won’t qualify for a Medicare rebate. However, if the facelift is required for medical reasons such as after an accident or trauma, some of the costs may be covered. The only way to receive an accurate surgical estimate is to schedule a consultation with Dr Doyle.
How long does a facelift last?
The longevity of a facelift is completely patient specific and also depends on the quality of the skin, skincare routine and lifestyle of each individual. All follow up cosmetic procedures may increase the lifespan of your facelift and the extent of your youthful appearance.
Does a facelift get rid of all facial wrinkles?
The effects of a facelift are concentrated to the bottom part of the face tightening and lifting the area around the mouth and jaw. Wrinkles in the upper part of the face may need additional cosmetic treatment such as fillers, laser treatment or injectable.
Do facelifts leave scars?
It is impossible to perform a surgery of the same nature as a facelift without leaving any scars however a highly trained plastic surgeon has the skill to perform the surgery such that they are not obviously recognisable scars and it can easily become less visible over time.
How much scarring can I expect after my facelift surgery?
When it comes to surgery, scarring can’t be avoided completely. However, because the incisions are placed near the hairline, any scars are barely noticeable. Your scars will fade away naturally over time. Dr Doyle will also provide you with a few scar management tips that will help keep any marks to a minimum.
What are the risks and potential complications of a facelift?
A facelift is an invasive surgical procedure that comes with the normal risks of surgery which include bleeding, scarring , asymmetry, loss of hair at the incision site and nerve damage. The occurrence of these incidents are rare.
Can I have a facelift if I smoke?
If you are a smoker, it’s highly recommended that you stop smoking for at least two to six weeks prior to your procedure. Smoking can affect the healing process because it affects blood flow and vessels. There are also certain medications and supplements that will need to be avoided in the week leading up to your surgery.
You will need to stop smoking during the recovery period for at least 6-8 weeks.
What should I do to prepare for a procedure?
Any facelift procedure starts with a surgical consultation. During your consultation, Dr Doyle can provide you with more specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery.
